The problem of high income inequality is exacerbated by social and spatial inequalities. This also leads to unequal access to healthcare, education, housing, the labour market, and even, in the opinion of Russians, inequality before the law. Since the mid-2000s, the Russian government started taking measures to solve this issue, focusing mainly on the economic growth of regions, as well as the welfare of low-income and vulnerable populations, by providing financial aid. Nevertheless, there still remains much to do. Significant achievements won’t be possible in the fight against inequality in Russia, without first solving the current problems with the labour market, implementation of the redistributive potential of tax systems and public services within health and education, improvement of anti-discrimination legislation and practice, as well as an effort to fight corruption, and inequality before the law.
