Oxfam in Russia and the “Kids are kids” Integration Centre for Refugee and Migrant Children held the third seminar on the integration of migrant children

29.03.2018
The primary focus of the seminar held on March 26 and 27 in Moscow has been on methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language. Organized by the “Kids are kids” Integration Centre for Refugee and Migrant Children and Oxfam in Russia, the seminar served as a platform for 49 professionals and volunteers to discuss relevant theoretical and practical issues of migrant children educational programmes. Experts in teaching Russian as a foreign language from the Higher School of Economics and Saratov State Agrarian University, professional teachers working with children in Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk, Kaluga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, the Moscow and Yaroslavl regions, as well as coursebook authors, shared their best practices. The experts in teaching Russian also took questions by teachers and volunteers. The seminar participants took particular interest in play-based methods giving additional motivation to both students and their parents.
The seminar revealed an urgent need for affordable Russian language course books with instructions in the mother tongue of migrants from Central Asia, including self-study courses.
The Oxfam in Russia team expresses its gratitude to the Russian language experts who accepted the invitation to take part in the seminar as well as Oxfam intern and a volunteer with the “Kids are kids” Integration Centre for Refugee and Migrant Children - Roksana Burkhanova, and Anna Ter-Saakova -- the Centre director, for organizing the event.
